Specialist for Angiology / Vascular medicine

Univ.-Prof. Baghestanian had been a senior physician at the angiological ward of the General Hospital of Vienna. He has been holding nationally as well as internationally numerous Presentations / Lectures from the field of Vascular medicine and cardiovascular risk factors. Beside numerous publications in high-ranked international scientific Journals, Dr. Baghestanian has regularly released articles in national (austrian) Magazines about prevailing topics in the field of Vascular Medicine. As a University Professor, he regularly helds Lectures at the Medical University of Vienna. For that reason, Dr. Baghestanian keeps always up to date with the latest standards in the Diagnostics and the Therapy (conservative, as well as interventional) in the field of Vascular Medicine. The Clinical and Scientific work of Prof. Baghestanian is particularly focused on:

Treatment of the main cardiovascular risk factors

  • Arterial Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): With the appropriate combination and dosage of the antihypertensive agents a successful treatment of hypertension can be achieved even in patients with uncontrolled disease.

  • Hypercholesterolemia: High Cholesterol levels in blood serum are almost always genetically determined and they are very little affected by the diet. Depending on the risk profile the introduction of the drug treatment may be necessary. The constant progression of the research in this field, promises the introduction of a couple of new agents for the treatment of resistant hypercholesterolemia in the next couple of years.
  • Diabetes mellitus: The prevalence of Overweight/Adipositas is worldwide continuously increasing, while the physical activity is decreasing. As a result, more and more people, especially in Europe and in the United States have increased blood sugar levels. The rapid increase of the significance of this social problem has led to intensive work into development of many new Medications in the field of Diabetology in the last couple of years, much more than in any other field of the medicine. With the optimal adaptation of the antidiabetic therapy, in combination with regular physical activity, we can reach normal glucose levels in more than 90% of the treated patients.

Through the medicamentous therapy in patients with various vascular diseases ( PA OD: peripheral artery occlusive disease, CHD: coronary heart disease / acute myocardial infarction, Angina Pectoris, CVOD Cerebrovascular occlusive disease/ Stroke, cerebrovascular accident as a result of carotid stenosis) are on one side the symptoms treated, but also on the other side a number of interventions (ie. Catheterisaion, Angioplasty) or (Bypass-) Operations can be spared or postponed.

Therapy of venous thromboembolism

Regarding the therapy of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, a couple of new medications have been in the recent years introduced on the market. These, so called „new oral Anticoagulants“ have revolutionized the therapy of venous thromboembolism. Since Univ.-Prof. Baghestanian has been a Principal Investigator (scientific Leader) of many international cilnical studies with anticoagulant drugs, he has a great experience with these substances even before they are introduced on the market. Thus, he is one of the leading specialists in Austria in the field of Deep Vein Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolism and their therapy with the new oral anticoagulants.
